Understanding the Child Psyche<\/p>

“My son doesn’t listen to me.”\u00a0“My daughter has no sense of grooming.”\u00a0My little one is just not learning how to do normal tasks.” These are comments sometimes heard from parents. There are some simple tips to try. As a parent you want to help your child, whatever age, build good habits. You want them to increase their independence. If you feel your child is not listening to you, it might be that you have not been clear in your language to him or her. For example – “Take out the trash”. This is open-ended without further instructions\u00a0such as\u00a0 “by 3:00 and put a fresh bag in the\u00a0 container “. The more specific, the better. Young people are not mind-readers. Refer to household tasks as family contributions not chores. Grooming is something we should want to do because we look better and feel better when well groomed. The lack of interest may\u00a0be more serious. Definitely\u00a0pay attention to exploring what is behind the desire to not be groomed. For the young child it may help to model behavior as a parent. Be supportive, not chastising. Reward, not shame. If the problems increase, it may be time to seek professional help.
